Building and Planning

Our Planning and Building Department is here to help residents, developers, builders and others in planning, designing and building a better Englehart. The Town of Englehart contracts the Building department to the Temiskaming Municipal Services Association (TMSA).

Good planning leads to orderly growth and the efficient provision of services. It helps decide where our community's residential, agriculture and business developments should be located. It also involves planning where parks, schools and other essential services should be provided. The Planning Board consists of four municipalities, the Township of Chamberlain, Municipality of Charlton and Dack, Town of Englehart and Township of Evanturel.

The primary role of the Building Department is to review, issue and inspect building permits to ensure that structures are safe, accessible, and comply with the Ontario Building Code. Through the enforcement of the Code, we ensure that the minimum standard of health, life and fire safety standards are maintained.

We also inspect buildings and properties when there is a complaint about the interior or exterior property conditions. You can report a property standards complaint online.

The Ontario Northland Railway

Still playing a significant economic role in the community's health, the Ontario Northland Railway Station is situated at the end of Third Street in Englehart. This station is primarily engaged in providing rail freight services for the transportation of mineral and forest products, chemicals, petroleum and other products to and from northeastern Ontario and northwestern Quebec.

The Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (Ontario Northland), an operational enterprise of the Province of Ontario, was established in 1902 and is a recognized leader in promoting sustainable economic growth by establishing and operating transportation and telecommunication links throughout northern Ontario. Headquartered in North Bay and operating primarily in northeastern Ontario communities such as Englehart, the Company provides passenger and freight rail services; refurbishment services; motor coach services and Ontera, telecommunications services.

First Impressions Community Exchange Program

In June, 2013, the Town of Englehart participated in a First Impressions Community Exchange Program with Markstay-Warren. Each team visited the partner community without announcing their arrival and reported on their first impression of the community. To ensure consistency, an information template was followed. The team interacted with members of the community in various aspects such as retailers, health care workers, municipal staff and residents in general.
